2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid: Mo’ Battery, Mo’ Mileage

After years of development capped by a painstaking study of 600 pre-production cars around the world, Toyota is finally ready to launch the plug-in Prius, which goes on sale in the spring of 2012.

As expected—and like the pre-pro cars—the plug-in is basically a Prius sporting a bigger, pricier lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 4.4 kWh. Contrast that to the standard Prius’s nickel-metal hydride pack, which can hold 1.3 kWh. The bigger battery pack also gets a heavier-duty cooling system, with the heat exchanger, cooling fan, and inverter all being upgraded. And that’s about it. Toyota made no changes to the car’s 98-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder internal-combustion engine or its 80-hp electric companion. Somewhat surprising, however, is the fact that Toyota managed to slash more than 200 pounds compared to the pre-production model we drove nearly two years ago. The plug-in model’s claimed 3165-pound curb weight is only 123 pounds more than that of the standard model.

Toyota says that the battery pack needs 2.5 to 3 hours to fully charge from a 120-volt source, or about half that when using a 240-volt outlet. With all that extra juice on board, the Prius is programmed to go farther and faster using electric power alone: Toyota claims 15 miles and up to 62 mph. That said, even in the driver-selectable EV mode, the gas engine will kick in under hard acceleration. Based on our past experience, that means anything more than about quarter throttle, although the programming could have changed since we drove the pre-production car.

More Miles

The point of all of this, of course, is reduced fuel consumption. Toyota claims that the plug-in will achieve an EPA combined rating of 87 mpge when using EV mode, and 49 mpg in regular hybrid operation. The latter number is 1 mpg shy of the standard Prius’s figure; blame the extra weight.
As we previously reported, the plug-in Prius will start at $32,760. This includes niceties like navigation, heated seats, LED daytime running lights, a rearview camera, Toyota’s Entune multimedia system, and unique wheels. That price is about $5000 more than a comparably equipped plugless Prius, although some of the difference will be offset by a $2500 federal tax credit for which the plug-in model is eligible. For spendier types, the loaded Advanced package adds premium sound, pseudo-leather upholstery, adaptive cruise control, collision warning, Safety Connect telematics, a power driver’s seat, and full-LED headlamps. With all that gear, the sticker climbs to $40,285.

Intel, TMC to Start Joint Research on Next-Generation In-Vehicle Multimedia Systems

Toyota City, Japan, November 10, 2011—Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) signed a memorandum of understanding today with Intel Corporation to begin joint research on next-generation in-vehicle multimedia systems* that would replace current navigation systems.

The joint research with Intel, experienced in information communication technologies, will target appropriate methods of providing information to drivers through in-vehicle systems, as well as information technologies that would enable seamless communication between on-board information systems and nearby information systems.

The amount of information exchanged between cars and drivers is expected to increase due to expanding demand for traffic information, destination searches, radar cruise control and other driving support functions. In response, Toyota and Intel will conduct research on vehicle-driver interfaces that do not interfere with driving.

With Wi-Fi and other various data transmission methods constantly improving, Toyota and Intel will research communication technologies to improve connectivity between cars and widely used information equipment, such as smartphones.

Furthermore, the two companies will research connectivity technologies and effective ways to seamlessly integrate cars with other aspects of people’s lives, including homes.

*In-vehicle systems that provide the user with a multitude of information. Beginning with in-vehicle radio and evolving to current-generation navigation systems, integration with smartphones, home appliances and other energy management systems is expected to be the next stage of evolution for the technology

Toyota Confirms Sub-$1000 Electric Vehicle Charger, Installation Included

[NOTE: After this article was published, Toyota's Jana Hartline contacted GreenCarReports to note that the price of the charger and installation will "start at $999," and attached a press release from Leviton that also cited "installation packages starting at $999."

The Consumer Reports article cited gave the price, including installation, as $999. It should have read "$999 or more".]

The cost of having an electric vehicle charger installed in your home just got a lot cheaper this week thanks to Toyota, which confirmed that its official 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid charging station will start at cost just $999, including installation.

While there are several home charging solutions now available for under $1000, installation is normally extra, prompting many electric vehicle owners to forgo level 2 charging stations at home altogether, or skip official routes and use alternative solutions to charge their car.

The pricing of the charging station isn’t exactly new news: when Toyota officially announced its pricing for the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, it said the official charger for the $32,760 plug-in hybrid would be offered at time of purchase “from $999”.

But according to Consumer Reports, Toyota has confirmed the $999 charging station deal includes installation. Better still, Toyota said that regardless of what is actually required to install the charging station in customer’s homes, everyone will pay the same.

The one-size-fits all pricing plan from Toyota is a breath of fresh air in an industry where electric car owners are regularly being charged anything up to $1,818 for an ‘easy’ installation of an official charging station -- with more complex installations costing thousands more.

In other words, for people who have older properties which require major wiring upgrades, or people who have their home’s main breaker box a ways from the place they want the charging station to be, the Toyota deal could save them a lot of money.

Since Toyota is subsidizing the installation costs of its official charging station, you won’t be able to take advantage of the deal unless you’ve ordered a 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid, but we think Toyota’s headline-grabbing price can only help to bring the price of rival charging stations down. In short, prices will fall, so if you're buying an electric car, make sure that you remember to shop around to get the best deal on your car's charging station.

Toyota Prius Hybrid: Ultimate Guide To 50-MPG Mid-Size Hatchback

Toyota's Prius hybrid has undoubtedly done more to raise awareness of green vehicles and improving fuel efficiency than any other single model on sale today.

First launched in the U.S. in 1999 and styled by a design team in California, the Prius name has since been applied to two further generations and by May 2008, over a million had been sold.

As such, there's a wealth of information out there on it and our Ultimate Guide to the model should help you decide on whether it's the car for you.

For information on the 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid, please see our dedicated Ultimate Guide to the model.

Leaked Toyota Prius C Brochure Reveals Styling, Mechanical Details for the Smallest Prius

The last time we had a good look at the 2012 Toyota Prius C—the third and smallest member of the expanding Prius range—it was covered in camouflage, but it still was clear that the production version of the eco-hatch wouldn’t be quite as funky-cool as the concept version. These images of a fully undisguised, market-ready Prius C confirm that impression, but the brochure from whence they came also delivers a lot more information.

According to the materials, the newest Prius sibling will be powered by a 72-hp, 1.5-liter engine and a 45-kW (60-hp) electric motor. Our Japanese isn’t what it used to be, but it appears that the front-wheel-drive, CVT-toting  C will deliver a total system output of 98 hp. At least in Japan, the five-door Prius C will be available in three trim levels and roll on 14- or 15-inch wheels. When it comes to the States next year, we expect to see similar trim availability, although they’ll probably use the same Roman-numeral monikers as applied to other U.S. Prius models.

The Prius C brochure includes dimensional figures, too: The Japanese-market C is 157.3 inches long, 66.7 inches wide, 56.9 inches tall, and has 100.4 inches between its wheels, which means it casts a nearly identical shadow to that of the latest Yaris five-door hatchback. The biggest difference between the C and the standard-size Prius is length—the former  is 19 inches shorter. Using Toyota’s figures for comparison, it will weigh some 660 pounds less than the Prius, coming in at just 2380 pounds.

Looks-wise, the Prius C is an attractive amalgamation of the 2012 Yaris and the minivan-esque Prius V. The interior features signature Prius cues such as the centralized digital gauge cluster, the blue starter button, and the same steering wheel found in the Prius and Prius V. Interestingly, the C has a conventional gear selector, and not the funky electronic nub used in its bigger hybrid siblings. The leaked material doesn’t offer any pricing info on the smallest Prius, but it likely will be positioned toe-to-toe with the $19,120 Honda Insight. We expect the Prius C will be introduced at the Tokyo auto show at the end of November before making its U.S. debut at January’s 2012 Detroit show.

Toyota, after 5 tough months, vows recovery in October

LOS ANGELES -- Toyota Motor Corp., still reeling from earthquake-related vehicle shortages, posted an 18 percent drop in September U.S. sales but said October will show gains as dealer inventories continue to rebound.

The automaker sold 121,451 vehicles in the United States last month, including Toyota, Lexus and Scion brands, down from 147,162 vehicles in September 2010.

Toyota has sold nearly 1.2 million vehicles in the U.S. market during the first nine months of 2011, down 9 percent from the same period in 2010.

Toyota’s U.S. dealer inventories remained below normal levels at the end of September -- nearly a month after the automaker said its North American assembly plants had resumed normal vehicle output.

Bob Carter, group vice president at Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc., said in a conference call today that the automaker had about 120,000 vehicles on dealer lots, representing a 30-day supply.

Carter said dealer inventories will continue to grow in coming weeks and months.

“That’s a little lighter than we’d like it to be, but we have a terrific number of wholesales that are going to be arriving to dealers this month,” Carter said in the conference call. “It’ll take us a while for us to get dealer ground stock back to what you’d think of as normal, but our flow of new products arriving is actually above what you’d expect from us at a normal level.”

Toyota Division sales fell 19 percent to 102,618 vehicles while Lexus sold 14,995 vehicles, a 12 percent decline. Scion sales grew 8 percent to 3,838 units.

Carter reiterated the company expects to begin posting monthly sales gains in October, reversing five months of double-digit declines.

“After five difficult months, we’re going to be back in a situation of year-over-year growth,” he said.

‘Spring in our step’

Toyota has “a little spring in our step” because of new product introductions and strong marketing plans for the fourth quarter, Carter said.

About 1,500 units of the redesigned 2012 Camry mid-sized sedan were in stock at the end of September after deliveries to dealers began late in the month.

Sales of the redesigned 2012 Toyota Yaris subcompact will begin this month along with Prius V sales. The Scion iQ will debut before the end of 2011, Carter said.

“We’re transitioning,” he said. “We’re coming back …just in time to be launching the largest barrage of new products that, frankly, we have done in this company in more than 25 years,” Carter said.

“You’re going to see us with a tremendous amount of marketing out there supporting all these new products.”

2012 Toyota Prius, Prius V, Prius Plug-in Hybrid: Now With Spaceship Sound

When the original Toyota Prius launched over ten years ago in the U.S. as a nerdy sedan, it wooed many buyers with its low-speed, near-silent operation.

Now the days of the whispering Prius are over, thanks to U.S. legislation requiring every single electric vehicle and hybrid car to fit an active pedestrian alert system -- or in lay terms, a noisemaker.

Needed or not, noisemakers are now part and parcel of every new electric or hybrid design  process, with automakers taking some interesting and novel approaches to work out just what virtual noise their cars should make.

Toyota’s answer to the new legislation has been to develop its own noise generation system which every 2012 model hybrid car will get.

Just like every other automaker thus far, Toyota has chosen to create a system which makes a noise which we think is a cross between a spaceship and a car alarm.

Although engineers at Toyota claim the new audible alert system -- which will be fitted to the 2012 Toyota Prius, 2012 Toyota Prius V and 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid -- is recognizable as a car yet also futuristic in order to represent the Prii’s advanced drivetrain, we have to disagree.

Then again, we’ve only got a YouTube video of its Vehicle Proximity Notification System (VPNS) to base that assessment on -- and if we’ve learnt anything from previous examples, the real-world sound of a pedestrian warning system is often a lot more palatable than a video demonstration can be.

There’s no word yet if the VPNS can be turned off by the driver in the same way as the audible alert system in the 2011 Nissan Leaf can, but given how strongly many legislators feel about the dangers posed by quiet electric and hybrid cars we think it’s highly unlikely Toyota will include that feature on its 2012 Prii lineup.

Would you want to buy a Toyota Prius if it made a noise like a deranged spaceship? Watch the video, and let us know your thoughts in the Comments below.

2012 Toyota Camry - GreenCarReports Review

The new 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid achieves EPA gas mileage ratings of up to 43 mpg city, 39 highway—which, if you need to haul a full family of five or even four adults, makes it possibly the greenest roomy sedan pick on the market. For that reason, the 2012 Toyota Camry lineup achieves an excellent 9 out of 10 rating here at GreenCarReports.

While the entire 2012 Toyota Camry lineup has been redesigned for 2012, it's the Camry Hybrid that gets the most substantially redesigned powertrain. Toyota has reduced the size of the battery pack and allowed a larger trunk than before, while the Hybrid Synergy Drive system gets many of the improvements from the latest Toyota Prius—resulting in improved responsiveness, better drivability, and smoother, more reassuring braking. The Camry Hybrid also inherits the latest Prius' Eco Mode and EV Mode—the latter allowing the Hybrid to go a half-mile or more on electric power alone.

But the rest of the Camry lineup isn't so bad either for green-minded shoppers, either. All four-cylinder models are now up to 25 mpg city, 35 highway—matching or beating the base-engine Honda Accord and Hyundai Sonata. And if you opt for the V-6, ratings are up 1 mpg this year, to 21/30.

Across the lineup, the Camry clearly prioritizes comfort and interior space over sexy styling. With its soft ride, roomy interior appointments, and reputation for reliability, resale value, and other frugal factors, it's a smart choice for families looking to get the most for their money as well as go green.
Those interested in the Hybrid should find more options at the dealership, too. For the first time, for 2012, the Camry Hybrid is offered in more than one trim level; Hybrid LE models come with dual-zone automatic climate control and a SmartKey system, while the XLE gets alloy wheels and leather.

For more, see the full review of the 2012 Toyota Camry lineup over at The Car Connection.

Buying A Used Toyota Prius? Here’s What You Need To Know

The venerable Toyota Prius hybrid is generally accepted as the car which changed consumer’s attitude toward hybrid-electric drivetrains.

While the Prius wasn’t the very first hybrid to be sold in the U.S. (the original Honda Insight beat it by a few months), it has proven by far the most popular to date.

And with more 1 million Prii sold since it launched in the U.S. 11 years ago, the Toyota Prius is now a regular on used car lots and websites across the U.S.

To help you, we’re covering the basics first and then dealing in-depth with each vehicle on its own page.

Follow the links to navigate among the different models.
How it works
All Prius models are powered by Toyota’s hybrid drivetrain, consisting of a gasoline engine and a pair of electric motors delivering power to the wheels through a planetary gearbox.

Effectively a computer-controlled continuously-variable transmission (CVT) the Prius on-board computer determines if the car will be powered by the gasoline engine, the electric motor, or a combination of both.

In low power-demand situations, the CVT can send excess power from the car’s engine to the on-board hybrid battery pack by turning one of the motors into a generator.

Gentle braking or deceleration also sends power from the wheels through the CVT to the battery pack by turning one or both motors into generators.

Due to the way the CVT works, sometimes the engine speed of the Prius does not match the speed of the car.

Disconcerting to many first-time Prius drivers, it doesn’t take long to get used to and is caused by the car’s on-board computer running the engine at its most efficient speed for the power demand at the time--making up the difference with electric torque

Support, service
All three generations of the Toyota Prius are still well supported by both official Toyota garages and a number of independent garages.

Some of the independent garages -- including Carolyn Coquilette's Luscious Garage in San Francisco -- offer upgrade services, including turning your standard Prius into a Plug-in Hybrid that can drive from 10 to 50 miles on all-electric power (depending on which conversion you choose).

However, with Toyota not officially supporting such upgrades, you should examine the consequences of upgrading your car before you commit to such an upgrade.

There’s also a very lively owners’ community, with regional Prius owner’s clubs in most major U.S. cities and many online forums dedicated to the brand.

2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid MPGs Beat Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata

The reviews of the 2012 Toyota Camry mid-size sedan are in now, and the consensus is that it's a competitively priced mild refresh with unadventurous styling. Which may be exactly what Camry buyers are looking for.
But on one metric--gas mileage--the 2012 Camry line shines.

The 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid model has been completely re-engineered, and the result is gas mileage that's not only projected to be 24 percent better than the 2011 model it replaces, but gets the car past the magic 40-mpg mark.

The new hybrid Camry's projected EPA ratings both surpass the previous model's ratings and handily beat two popular competing hybrid mid-size sedans: the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid.

Here's how the ratings line up for hybrid sedans that are now on sale or will be within a few months:
  • 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid: 43 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, 41 mpg combined (PROJECTED)
  • 2011 Ford Fusion Hybrid: 41 mpg city, 36 mpg highway, 39 mpg combined
  • 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid: 35 mpg city, 40 mpg highway, 37 mpg combined
Gas mileage has clearly risen, as you can see from the lower fuel efficiency ratings of two hybrid sedans that are no longer on sale:
  • 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid: 31 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, 33 mpg combined
  • 2011 Nissan Altima Hybrid: 33 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, 33 mpg combined
One thing to keep in mind about the fuel economy ratings for the 2012 Camry Hybrid: The highest mileage (shown above) applies only to the LE model. A more luxurious Camry Hybrid XLE trim level has added features and different wheels, giving it slightly lower gas mileage at 41 mpg city, 38 mpg highway.

All-New Yaris Sized Right for Fun and Function

LOS ANGELES, August 17, 2011 – With the right size for drivers who need an agile and functional vehicle, the all-new 2012 Toyota Yaris Liftback arrives this fall with sporty styling, outstanding safety features and improved fuel economy.

“There is a lot of excitement in the subcompact category today, but the all-new 2012 Toyota Yaris is at the top of the list when it comes to combining value and fuel efficiency with style and fun,” said Toyota Division Group Vice President and General Manager Bob Carter. “Today’s young, price-conscious shoppers want the complete package that the new Yaris offers: room for their friends and gear, along with a strong list of standard convenience and safety features.”

The all-new Yaris features a remarkable attention to detail in the design and engineering of the vehicle. From its smart, interior design and quiet, refined passenger cabin to its responsive driving dynamics, the 2012 Yaris answers car-shoppers’ demands for a no-compromise vehicle.

Liftback for Today’s Lifestyles
Today, liftback body styles dominate the subcompact vehicle segment, preferred by 70 percent of new retail car buyers in this category. The new Yaris Liftback has been completely redesigned for 2012, featuring a more sporty, aggressive look. The wheelbase has been lengthened by two inches, to 98.8 inches, with the overall length of the vehicle growing by 2.9 inches, to 153.5 inches. The height of the new Yaris is also reduced by 0.6 inches for a stance that is both lower and longer. The result is up to 68 percent more cargo room along with additional headroom and passenger volume, all within a highly aerodynamic body yielding a 0.30 coefficient of drag.

The 2012 Yaris is equally at home navigating through city traffic, heading to the mall or hitting the highway for a road trip. With a tight turning circle and quick, responsive steering, the new Yaris is easy to maneuver on crowded streets and parks in tight spots.

Grade Strategy
The new Yaris will be offered in three grades, with the entry-level L and value-packaged LE editions available either as a three-door liftback or five-door liftback. The sport-tuned SE is available only as a five-door. Standard equipment levels have been improved across all grades while simplifying options to make it easier for customers to find the car they want at an affordable price.

Emphasis on Driving and Performance
The all-new Yaris was designed for fun and functionality.  Both three-door and five-door models are powered by a 1.5-liter, 16-valve, four-cylinder DOHC engine equipped with variable valve timing with intelligence (VVT-i), producing 106 hp at 6,000 rpm and 103 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,200 rpm. The broad torque curve provides plenty of response for both manual transmission and automatic transmission vehicles.

All Yaris L, LE and SE models are available with a new four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission, featuring a more compact, lighter-weight design and reduced friction for greater fuel efficiency.  A smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission is available on L and SE models only.

For the all-new Yaris, both the front MacPherson-strut and rear torsion-beam suspension have been tuned to deliver a better ride and improved driving feel. The front stabilizer bar has been increased to 24.2 mm (0.95 in.). Standard tire sizes are increased as well to 15-inch on L and LE versions, and 16-inch on the SE.

Electric power steering provides good road feel at highway speeds while aiding low-speed parking maneuvers.

Nine Standard Airbags Lead Impressive List of Safety Features
Starting with nine standard airbags, the all-new Yaris offers an impressive array of safety features. Standard driver and front-passenger dual-stage airbags (SRS) are complemented by front-seat mounted side airbags and a knee airbag for the driver. Roll-sensing side airbags are fitted to both front- and rear-row seats for a total of nine airbags.

In common with all Toyota vehicles, the Yaris features Toyota’s Star Safety System™, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist. The new Yaris also features Smart Stop Technology, Toyota’s brake-override system, as standard.

New to the 2012 Yaris is Toyota’s Advanced Whiplash Injury-Lessening (WIL) front-seat structure. The design helps to ensure that all areas from the head to the lower back are equally supported, helping to reduce whiplash-type injuries during certain types of collisions.

The new Yaris features an impact-absorbing body structure utilizing high-tensile strength steel to effectively distribute collision forces.

For the first time, Toyota has engineered a single-windshield wiper with wet-arm system for reduced weight and better performance. The system sprays washer fluid from the base of the wiper arm directly in the path of the blade for improved cleaning and wiping action.

Toyota Prices 2012 Yaris at $14,875, Confirms that “It’s a CAR!“

Toyota has announced pricing and its social-media angle for the redesigned 2012 Yaris compact. Beyond that, though, Toyota declined to reveal little else about the car, although it did show it off at Chicago’s Lollapalooza music festival last weekend (see fuzzy inset photo; the car also has been revealed as the Japanese-market Vitz). Toyota’s social-media campaign is spearheaded by the catchphrase “It’s a CAR!”—we respect Toyota’s oneness with the Yaris’s appliance-like nature.

Prices for the 2012 Yaris will essentially hold firm relative to last year’s. Prices for the base L three- and five-door hatchback models start at $14,875, the same as 2011 models’ equipped with the optional Convenience package—the 2012 Ls get those bits as standard. The 2012 three-door LE hatchback will ring in at $16,385, and the five-door LE will set you back $16,860—increases of $145 and $140, respectively. Toyota did announce a new sporty SE model, which sits at the top of the Yaris range and will start at $17,160 with a manual transmission (a four-speed automatic is an $800 option). Toyota gave few specifics regarding the SE other than it will only be available in five-door guise and will feature an “enhanced tuned suspension.”

Toyota will release more information on the 2012 Yaris in the “near future,” which we assume will be before the car enters into production in three weeks. In the meantime, we will confirm that the Yaris is a car.
